It’s happened. After 12 long years, Valve has finally announced a new Half-Life. Valve took to Twitter to make it official, confirming the long rumoured VR Half-Life game. It’s called Half-Life: Alyx and it’s touted as a flagship virtual reality title; a game designed to be a real selling point for Steam VR.

“We’re excited to unveil Half-Life: Alyx, our flagship VR game, this Thursday at 10am Pacific Time,” announced Valve on Twitter. “Can’t wait to share it with all of you!”

Valve is set to spill the beans on the new Half-Life game in just two days’ time. It may not be the Half-Life 3 plenty of folks were hankering for but it’s definitely something.

Half-Life VR is a game which has long been rumoured and we now know it’ll take the form of Half-Life: Alyx. There are no details to speak of just yet but previous leaks (with the correct naming) have suggested HL: Alyx will be a prequel to Half-Life 2 in which you play as Alyx.

Some will no doubt be disappointed that Valve is focusing on VR for the next Half-Life but the writing has been on the wall for some time. Just as Half-Life 2 was controversially used to drive (at the time, hated) Steam adoption, so too is the next Half-life being used to drive VR. Valve couldn’t hope to put together a standard FPS campaign and not disappoint after all these years, and so Half-Life: Alyx is a handy sidestep. The Half-Life franchise has always been about moving gaming forward, and this is exactly that. VR is the next level in terms of immersion and the perfect place to truly innovate with this franchise.

All eyes are now on Thursday then, when Half-Life: Alyx will be revealed to the world.
