WoW: Shadowlands Contributed to Digital Game Sales Earning Highest Revenue Ever Last Month

Digital video game sales reached the highest monthly revenue ever last month, earning as much as $11.5 billion. As reported by SuperData, World of Warcraft: Shadowlands played a major role in driving up PC revenue by 22% when compared to that from November 2019.

The MMORPG’s latest expansion was an overall success, bringing in the highest monthly revenue since 2008 – when the Wrath of the Lich King expansion released – and the highest player numbers since 2010. While both are likely to decline over the coming months, Shadowlands did significantly better than Battle for Azeroth, an expansion that also launched strong but ended up being among the more divisive in Blizzard’s roster.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War sold a total of 5.7 million units across all platforms in November, 9% more than Black Ops IIII, which was previously the series’ record holder. Interestingly enough, 2019’s Modern Warfare had 2.7 times as many players in November 2020, an occurrence attributed to the free-to-play Warzone mode. Either way, these are good times for Activision-Blizzard, at least financially.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla also managed to sell 50% more copies than Odyssey did at launch. Over on the indie side of things, Twitch phenomenon Among Us saw half a billion active users last month, SuperData describing it as “by far the most popular game ever in terms of monthly players.”
