Microsoft has announced it’s adding in one of its most requested features for Windows 10. Well, actually, it’s just adding something back in it had already taken out, and calling it a new ‘improvement’.

As of the latest Windows 10 Insider build, Microsoft has separated its Windows updates into Optional Update and Security Updates. Optional Updates will include drivers, feature updates, and non-security-related quality updates. Here, users will be able to pick and choose whether they install each of these updates, rather than Windows 10 deciding NOW is the time and rebooting your PC for the next half hour.

There are many reasons why you wouldn’t necessarily want to update your Windows 10 installation, such as loss of time while it installs, issues with the update (of which there have been many), or any potentially breakages which can occur among enterprise users, particularly monolithic businesses what may be ill-equipped for sporadic forced updates.

Security updates for Windows 10 will still be mandatory, although of course these are viewed as vital patches which do serve to protect users. Fair enough. #

If you’re a Windows Insider then the Windows 10 Build 18985 is available right now, while it will filter down to normal users in due course. The expectation is this will be added in the W10 20H1 update scheduled for the first half of 2020. Once you do have the update you’ll be able to find the option updates in a new page which can be found at:

Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View Optional Updates

So, hooray, it’s like we’re finally going back to how Windows used to be. Good job Microsoft, a fantastic new feature as always.
