It seemed a little ludicrous when the idea was first mooted a few weeks ago but live service online shooter Overwatch will be getting a proper numbered sequel. Overwatch 2 was announced during BlizzCon 2019 this weekend, dishing up an engine upgrade with visual enhancements, extensive PvE story missions, new heroes, and a multiplayer mode call Push.

The good news for long-time Overwatch players is nothing will be left behind. Everything from Overwatch will carry over to Overwatch 2. This includes all of the original game’s heroes, maps, modes, and all unlocked cosmetics such as character skins. Considering how focused Overwatch’s progression and monetisation systems are on loot boxes and cosmetics, bringing all unlocked content to Overwatch 2 is a welcome move.

At is heart though, Overwatch 2 definitely sounds more like an expansion than a traditional sequel. It’s a way to use the vast amount of lore Blizzard has been building up around the Overwatch universe, and a Left 4 Dead co-op story mode is probably the easiest way of doing exactly that. Outside of the PvE experience, it’s more of the same tried and trusted 6v6 multiplayer, expanded with a larger roster and bigger maps.

Blizzard has yet to even allude to a vague release date for Overwatch 2 so it sounds as if it may still be a ways off yet. They haven’t even confirmed the platforms either. PC is assured, although it’s unclear whether Overwatch 2 will be targeting PS4/Xbox One or next-gen PS5/Xbox Scarlett.
